Thank you, John Lennon
I hosted neighbors last night and one of my quests made the statement that we can all agree that passwords are necessary. My immediate response was “No”. It bothered me as to why I would say that, because in the world as we now define it. Passports are needed, if not necessary. But I did not and do not retract my statement.
This morning, I remembered John Lennon’s Song “Imagine”
And my answer came to me. In the world I and John Lennon envision. Passports are not necessary. Lennon knew the world we live in. He knew passports were required to practice his art. He stayed in the United States because he enjoyed the ability to walk the streets of New York and not be hassled. He wanted and eventual obtained his green card.
But in his song, he envisioned a world where designations were not necessary. A world were we all lived in peace.
I will not pretend to put as eloquently as he did. But are troubles are not caused by how we are alike. It is our inability to overlook how we are different.
Characterizing Our Differences.
A Brit as John Lennon always claimed, an American as I will always be identified, for the most part these two nations are able to overlook our differences and focus on our common goals. But Asians and Africans, Black and White, Russian and Ukrainian, Jewish and Christian, these are all designations designed to emphasize our differences. In many cases these designations cause conflict.
Lennon envisioned a world were designations of differences were meaningless. In his refrain, he said.
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
What I wished I said Last Night.
I choose to see a world where differences are unimportant. Since, Lennon wrote and performed “Imagine” it has become increasing difficult to do. But I personally choose to believe in a world where are differences are unimportant.
While I am not naive, I choose to see this vision as my goal in life. Without this belief that things can be better, we will lose our hope. I choose joining John Lennon’s group and hoping we can improve our lives. I hoping, “I am not the only one”
