Should it be Eliminated?
Thoughts about our electoral system.
I keep getting questions asking me if I about eliminating the electoral college from our voting system. Do I support modification of this system. The answer is I do.
Should we get rid of the electoral college? I would suggest this is a rhetorical question, because the quick answer is we can’t. The electoral college system is in the constitution and any attempt to modify our election system would require an amendment. 3/4 of the states need to ratify any amendment for it to become law. Currently about 1/2 the states lean republican, meaning that 1/2 the states which lean republican would have to ratify the amendment. On a national basis there are more democratic voters then republican voters. It is unlikely that republican leaning states would ratify any amendment to eliminate the electoral college system.
So we can not eliminate the electoral college.
Donald Trump’s Disruption
How much can Donald Trump destroy our government.
He is trying to increase the presidents ability to fire career employees. This is a potential disaster for our form of democracy. If successful it paves the way for our democracy to become a dictatorship. There are several issues.
It places loyalty to the president over loyalty to the country. Each change of administration will put millions of jobs at risk. Being a public servant no longer will be a desirable position. Because a long career will no longer be likely. Federal employees currently get an attractive pension. The quality of government employees will decrease drastically.
It will create a yes, sir environment. Open conversations about options will no longer be norm. The simple strongly political solutions are the only considerations. Of course this is the direction of the Republican Party for years.
Republican versus Democrat
The Republican Party wishes to control lives. They do not care for messy discussion. Their solutions are the only solutions. Negotiation and compromise show weakness. To a Republican it is evil to be a Democrat, to be a liberal.
Part of being a liberal is an open mind. Liberalism is not desirable. Our leading conservative likes to consider himself as being “The Grim Reaper”. “The Grim Reaper” does not suggest and open mind.
As a country we can not afford more divisive partisanship.
