DeSantis Keeps Gyms Open.
His reason is that healthy people are less likely to have severe cases of COVID-19. I find this an interesting argument.
History – Tennis
Early in my adult life I began playing tennis. While Borg and McEnroe were battling, I was playing tennis. I took lessons and spent a week each summer going to a tennis camp. Three times I visited Vic Braden’s Camp in California. I went to Dennis Van der Meer’s camp in Ontario. I was a tennis freak.
Near the end in my early 30’s I was playing tennis indoor 5-6 times a week. Many of those tennis sessions would last an hour and a half of practice. My friend and I would each have a can of balls in our pocket. During the session we would begin a rally. When the rally ended one of us would take a ball out of our pocket and start a new rally immediately. Near the end we might play a tie breaker for a little competition. Afterward when friends asked us who won the answer was we didn’t play a game. It was a true workout.
In my mid-30’s I met and married the woman who is the mother of my child. After the marriage, tennis no longer was the center of my life. At first I would play 2-3 times a week. We moved and then became 2-3 times a month. Finally, my son was born and I no longer was able to play at a level which was enjoyable. I stopped. Nothing replaced it.
Soccer Referee
As my son became older, he started playing soccer. First in recreational leagues and quickly on competitive teams. He was good. Throughout this time I worried about balance in his life and perspective. I judged whether he was ok by the smile on his face when he placed a soccer ball at his feet. It was clear he wanted to play soccer. I would periodically let him know that when soccer was no longer enjoyable he should quit.
How do I fit in? On one of his early competitive teams due to a shortage of referees, his coach often ended up refereeing the games. I thought that was just wrong. It limited his ability to coach. I decided to help solve the problem and got certified as a referee.
This continued until several years after my son graduated from high school. I exercised some to be in shape to referee. Weekends were often spent refereeing youth soccer tournaments. At first I might referee 6-8 games on a Saturday. In the end I would limit it to 3 games a day tops. I mostly did young kids on small fields. I worked hard and did not stand in the middle of the field but attempted to be in proper position to make every call.
This ended about 8 years before I retired. Since then I have done little in the way of exercise.
Then Coronavirus Hit
I decided that one of the things I could do to increase my chances was to get in better shape. About 15 years ago I bought a WII with a WII Fit application and balance board. I still have it.
I took out the WII and began using the WII Fit. At first I would exercise for about a half hour. Slowly, I built the exercise program up to about an hour and a half.
Now I am in the best condition I have been in since I was playing tennis. I was able to do this without putting myself at risk at a gym, but in the privacy of my own home.
My WII Fit Program.
