As Allows Trump doesn’t get it…
Yes the police are needed, but not because without them there is no chaos. It is because there is chaos and lawlessness that we need police. We need the police to deal with bad apples.
Trump again is applying old rules to fix long standing problems. He is right when he says there are many good and well meaning police officers. Still systemic racial issues exist in the ranks of many police departments throughout the United States. To deny this is to deny the truth.
Of course in the past, Donald Trump…
- Claimed there where good people demonstrating for white supremacy.
- Has pardoned Joe Arpaio of charges of racial profiling.
- Pardoned Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher of war crimes. Then held him up as a hero at a rally.
He now is saying that yes, we must improve training for police officers, but that we need not address racism. Teaching racists police officers how to de escalate situations, will not change the fact the same police officer feels uncomfortable when encountering a young black man at a traffic stop.
What ever solutions we try. We must be vigilant, must be flexible and must be consistent. To solve the basic problem requires trust on both sides and this trust will not come from new laws or executive orders. We must build institutional respect for all people.
Donald Trump, by encouraging his base, is not the right man for job.
His motto… is he wishes to make America great again. While I wish for America to be great, I don’t believe that trying old failed policies is the right way to do that. We need a person with vision, with new ideas, to address the issues of systemic racism, not someone who denies it existence and fans the flames of division.
We need a person of character, who may try something that fails but changes with the times admits mistakes and takes steps to fix failures of the past.
Loyalty…
Loyalty is important, but not to the office of the president, but to the American people.
