Social Justice Discovery
First as a member of the non-majority, my first instinct is to spend a lot of time actively listening to the minority complaints and suggestions. I would not be judgemental, but would ask a lot of questions to help the issues to be heard and understood. While I would be present, I would not consider it my place to add much to the discovery discourse.
The goal would to be hear as many viewpoints as possible. At this point nothing would be on the table, and nothing would be off the table.
The recognition is that discrimination does exist and must be removed from all public forums.
Search for solutions…
At this point I would start to insert comments, but still not judgements. The goal is to learn about methods which would protect individuals from the actions of bad apples in all institutions. The use of language would be a major discussion and how as a society can we make all parties less uncomfortable. How can all parties become closer and realize our goals are shared?
What is it everyone has a right to expect.
- Equal treatment under the law.
- Equal treatment in the court system.
- A proper meal when needed throughout each day
- Access to health care.
- Access to a good education.
- Safety at home and when lawfully moving anywhere in society.
There may be more examples, but I start here.
Selecting Solutions…
The solution solving aspect of the topic will be the most difficult for some. At some point politics will need to take a back seat to progress. Note, I believe it is way to early to actually draft legislation, but the following are at the top of my agenda:
- A single payer universal health care system which include physical, mental, and dental health care
- A robust education system available to all through college.
- A robust technical education including apprentice/mentoring work.
- Housing for those unable to provide for themselves or their families.
- Meals for anyone unable to provide for themselves or their families.
The Elderly…
I am mostly retired. The elderly are an untapped resource in this country. My first father in-law was able to maintain a family owned business through the depression. I wanted to learn from his experience. I would listen and let him discuss how he dealt with unable to pay taxes or workers because his product would not sell… Most of our older citizens have a story to tell.
The young would be wise to listen and use what they can to improve their future. What have we done well? What will we do better?
For me the greatest gift I can give my son, is a future where he can thrive.
While small steps may happen quickly…
A quick fix and then sweeping these issues under a rug won’t work. An extended dialog is required to change all of the systemic issues.
