Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
To live a full life certain things must be true.
- In times of bad weather shelter is a necessity
- Plenty of drinking water
- Plenty of clean air
- Enough food to prevent hunger
For a democracy to sustain liberty, the electorate must be well educated and properly informed.
And to pursue happiness, we must be healthy to safely move about as we please.
What role should government play
In this country what part should government play in.
- Providing drink water (Public or Private)
- Removing our waste (Public or Private)
- Insuring our air is safe to breath (Public or Private)
- Making certain all children have good health care and good nutruition (Public or Private)
- Safety organizations such as Police and Fire (Public or Private)
- National defense (Public or Private)
- Education of our population (Public or Private)
Note if you have answered “Public” to any of these questions you support a socialistic solution to resolve an issue.
What is so bad about socialism.
We as an educated society need to recognize that socialism was an economic system which was advocated by the communist political system. But to equate the two is just plain wrong and to use the statement that we don’t want a communist government is in my opinion ignorant.
As stated above, it is important to recognize that we live in a mostly capitalistic society. But how can we improve? How can we reduce poverty and broaden the window into the American Dream?
I personally believe that there are certain aspects where the government needs to support (socialism) every law abiding citizen and legal resident. Income, religion, ethnicity should not matter. Everyone needs:
- A roof over their heads.
- Food and water.
- Clean air to breath.
- A good education.
- A job which will support the roof over their heads, food, water.
- And at some point everyone needs medical attention.
Health Care
There is no single area where the discussion is more divisive. But let’s look at where we are at and where we need to be.
Should catastrophic illnesses cause people to make decisions on whether to eat or pay for medicines? Should they wipe out retirement accounts and force our elderly to lose their homes and live in retirement communities, basically put out to pasture where they can not be heard or bother anyone. Our current medical insurance programs often lead to these type of outcomes.
Should insurance companies make millions and billions of dollars, while they refuse payment for health services doctors request based on cost? Where insurance companies make strong suggestions about how much time a doctor can spend with a particular patient. Where our insurance companies actually tend to direct treatment. Our current medical system often leads in this type of direction.
Some companies often hire multiple part time employees instead of one full time employee, because it is cheaper to employ several people part time instead of one full time because of the cost of health insurance which is not required for a part time employee. This unfortunately is the case with many of our jobs today, and it leads to people taking a second job to earn a living wage and puts people one illness away from the unemployment. Which in turn weakens the family structures.
Conclusion
I have often said that our health care system will never be fair until the word universal is applied to it. I have challenged many people to dispute this statement and no one has yet to provide an argument which acurate.
The second test for our health care system is I find it just plan wrong when the first question asked when approaching a medical need is to see my insurance card. While most medical institutions now ask why you are here first, I find I still need to provide my insurance card prior to seeing the doctor.
The medical plan which best satisfies these conditions is Medicare for All. It is universal and removes the need to worry about payment before a patient sees the doctor. Yes there will be paperwork and bureaucracy, but is far and away the most fair and provides the most benefit both short and long term.
