Georgia Run-off Elections
Stacey Abrams Versus Voter Suppression
Stacey Abrams has convinced minorities in Georgia that voting matters. The question now is will it work on run off elections. The run-off election system undervalues the minority vote. By creating a 50% vote necessary to win outright election, it provides two chances to defeat minority candidates.
When a strong minority candidate is up for election, he runs against multiple candidates in the general election. The field multiple candidates results in no one getting 50% of the vote. The voter turnout is lower and less minority in the run-off meaning the strong minority candidate loses in run-off election.
Enter Stacey Abrams. She has energized those suppressed voters. For years minority vote has bee suppressed in the south, by limiting voting locations in the inner city and increasing police patrols to intimidate those of color. Stacey Abrams has convinced this block of voters that their vote counts.
Georgia Republican Leaders.
If Jack Kennedy were alive today and writing a sequel to profiles in courage, the Republican officers of the state of Georgia would be worthy of his praise. Their steadfast defense of a non-fraudent election deserves commendation.
A group of republican office holders have stood up to Donald Trump. They have stood up for the truth. Bravo!
These run-offs decide the Senate.
It is hard to imagine that both Democratic candidates might win, but if there is to be a change in tenor to our politics. This is the desired result. Mitch McConnell has already said he will continue to be the grim reaper as long as he is in charge of the senate.
He will not compromise. A civil dialog is not possible with him in charge. This makes the election of Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff that much more important. There election does not guarantee a more civil discourse, but it certainly improves the chances.
