No one should be taking credit for a job well done…
I can not think of any crisis since Katrina which has been handled more poorly. Up until last night his rhetoric has been one of denial. While history may prove many of his statements statistically accurate, they none the less have contributed to the situation we now find ourselves in.
He basically has said the American economy is strong and we need do nothing but wash our hands and this will go away. He has stated statistics and made decisions based on keeping our statistics low. Only when pressured did he appoint a non-science believing Mike Pence to be in charge of the response to what is becoming a major health crisis. At this point science should be our ally, not our foe.
Now that we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic, what next.
The governor of New York’s action with respect to New Rochelle might serve as a model. He has created a 1 mile raduis / quarantine zone around the hub of the New York epic-center. Containment while not perfect is the key. This is a disease that without extreme measures will continue to spread. Our response must be extreme.
Our president’s response is one of limiting travel from parts of Europe and was our hands. Yes, he is proposing some form of economic relief package which will enable common citizen’s who feel ill miss work. This action requires Congressional approval, which I hope will be forth coming immediately. It also includes a temporary tax cut for the middle class, to last until surprise, just after the election? Talk about self serving.
His travel ban does not include the countries where his three (3) golf resorts reside in the UK. What say you America? How does this make America great again? All of the travel restrictions are being imposed without consulting our allies, once again isolating us from our friends. Far from making America great again, it weakens our alliances and the free world.
So where should we go from here…
I personally had a road trip planned across the southern United States and back which would start in 2 weeks. I’ve decided it would be unwise to take this trip. It should be clear by now that all travel should be discouraged. The case of Rudy Gobert may provide a much needed ripple effect which will reduce our travel to essential travel only. My hope is that much in the same way that Magic Johnson’s HIV diagnose shed light on proper respect for AIDS, Rudy Gobert has shed light on appropriate actions needed to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Life needs to go on… but first we need to hit the pause button.
