To the Desert
The Pacific Northwest was all about family
Many of whom I had not seen for a long time. I met a grandson or 2, one I had seen as a 2 year old the other I had not. Their parents are doing well and have a piece of paradise, with chickens, goats, and fruit trees. My wife would have loved the spot, it was exactly what she wanted for retirement. A piece of land I would never had provided for her.
I then had a delightful supper with my daughter at Chinocks on the wharf in Seattle. The crab and shrimp linguine was out of the world. My daughter made quick friends with my companion. It was a special evening.
The next day we drove down to Vancouver, WA and had lunch with a cousin and her husband. This was special since I can’t remember when the last time we saw each other. Growing up we spent summers together. Special evenings playing a card game called 63 with her parents. The games were unique as the women beating the men all the time.
Onto Oregon to see my son.
When the pandemic became real for all of us, I had planned a trip to visit my son. Even before Rudy Gobert got COVID, I was waffling about coming or staying. It became came clear it would be better to not travel and I waited.
The highlight was a tour of local farm stands. The trip included a homemade apple pie and several good meals.
On the final day, we went to a Honda dealer in Portland and drove around the city for a while. On the way back to Salem we stopped at a winery and a monastery which produced chocolate.
Onto the Utah Desert.
Throughout this trip I have been to places which are new to my experience. The drive from Salem to Sisters, Oregon. The drive through the Cascades was curvy, up and down. The driving was rough. After Sisters we arrived on a upper plain. Through this day the land is green and support a robust agriculture. We stopped in Twin Falls, ID that night.
The next day we slowly continued our drive from Twin Falls through Salt Lake City, UT and eventually Moab, UT. The land changed from farming to ranching to desert. Another mountain ranch was encountered between Salt Lake City and Moab.
Today was Arches National Park.
The plants were something I didn’t say.
While the enviroment was new to me. I found it beautiful.
