The Lies Must Stop
Jim Jordan on the Courts
“All the Democrats want to do is pack the courts.” Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. After 4 years of court packing by Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump. It is without a doubt the most significant accomplishment of Donald Trump’s term.
These appointees are young and the balance will take decades to undo. How did it happen? In 2013 a Democratic Senate changed the rules to allow a simple majority to confirm a federal judge. In 2014 the Senate became Republican controlled. Mitch McConnell became leader.
Many Barack Obama nominees were not given hearings by the Republican Senate. Donald Trump appointed every federal court justices possible. In 2013 a Democratic Senate changed the filibuster rules requiring only a simple majority to confirm a justice. in order to confirm most if not all of these justices.
Supreme Court Nominations.
Barrack Obama appointed Merritt Garland to fill a supreme court vacancy on March 16, 2016. The Republican Senate refused to hold hearings based on the upcoming election. Lindsey Graham went as far to say that he would not support any nominee during an election year, regardless of party. He was lyiing.
Donald Trump was elected President. In 2017 the Republican Senate changed the rules so Supreme Court Justices needed only a simple majority. Donald Trump appointed Neil Gorsuch, who was confirmed.
After denying Merritt Garland a hearing for 8+ months as a Supreme Court justice, based on the next justice should be appointed by the next President. Amy Coney Barrett was pushed through the system less than 2 months before the next election by a Republican Senate. Lindsey Graham lead the charge through his committee. This appointment changed the balance of the court from 5-4 to 6-3 Republican appointees. A balance which will take decades to undo.
Jim Jordan’s statement is a lie. It is the Republicans who have successfully packed the courts.
Gun Control.
Many Republicans are stating that the 2nd amendment is absolute and any laws to limit gun ownership is unconstitutional. This is for the conservative courts to decide. I believe in the right to own a gun for self defense and recreational use. I believe there are limits.
The framer’s of the constitution did not envision today’s military style weapons. Most guns at the time required reloading after a single shot. These weapons were not mass killing machines. Either the 2nd amendment needs to change or the laws need to reflect the original weapons known to the writers of the constitution.
What is true is there is way to much gun violence in our society. A person who advocates gun control is not a tyrant for the simple reason that the majority of US citizens agree that gun’s need to be controlled more. It is a tyrant who refuses to accept the will of the majority and imposes their will on a minority.
Again the Republicans are lying.
Democrats also Lie.
Politicians frame the opponent in a negative light to get elected. This has to stop. We must get back to ideas. It is working with good ideas that we can build a better future.
Infrastructure Bill
Joe Biden’s infrastructure is far reaching maybe expanding the meaning of infrastructure. No question, but in truth the needs of the future are at stake. We need to build a infrastructure for the future and not just repair the infrastructure of the past.
This bill needs to be bold. Roads and transportation are part of infrastructure. Power grids and water supply are part of infrastructure. But is the power of the past what we need for the future. Scientist tell us we need to deal with global warming and how we generate and use power is part of the equation.
In today’s world the internet is integral to most people’s lives. Any child without internet access is handicapped. The internet has become part of the infrastructure.
Joe Biden is telling us this is also a jobs bill. He wants to generate the jobs. Not just today’s jobs, but good paying jobs of the future.
So let’s start talking about goals and have less posturing about results. And let’s as a country vote out anyone who is just a naysayer. Who finds it more important to put down the opponent than to discuss the goals.
How about it Democrats and Republicans?
Are you willing to talk issues and stop trying to make points?
