What is the Big Deal?
Yes, Let’s Open Up…
A mask mandate does not prevent opening up for business. I don’t understand why Republicans take such great pride in ruling against science. This last week’s series of states to left mask mandates is just plan wierd.
Governors are saying we have rights and wearing a mask or not wearing a mask is a individual choice. Is it a personal choice to have a driver’s license to drive a car. No, you need to meet a state mandate criteria to hold a driver’s license. Your personal choice is to drive a car or not.
To Smoke or Not to Smoke…
How about smoking? I for one don’t want to return to a non-smoke free environment. Until the late 70’s non-smoking zones were few and far between. Today non-smoking zones are the norm. Smokers have been regulated to small areas.
The reason, science provided a link between smoking and lung cancer. Behaviors were changed so fewer people smoked and those who did were mandated to smoke in remote areas away from the general public.
Professional Requirements…
How about practicing medicine? Do we want every Tom, Dick, and Harry to decide they are a Dr. and begin prescribing drugs and providing health care? Again the answer is no, we want doctors to go through medical school.
Lawyers, police officers, teachers all require training before being granted the right to their professions.
Mask Mandates Work.
Wearing masks slow the spread of COVID-19. They are a path to a new normal. Masks are needed to support a strong economy. and to open our country back up.
Yes, we all have rights, but pulling a gun and shooting someone in the middle of the street for no reason is not one of them. Not wearing a mask in the midst of this pandemic endangers those around us. We should not have that right.
Not having a mask mandate is hypocritical.
It doesn’t make sense. Why thumb your nose at a scientific community that prolongs your life. Life expectance has improved through out the world. It has to do with lots of things, but the most important is our increased knowledge.
We know exercise is good for us. Certain foods keep us healthy. We know certain behaviors lead to a higher risk of cancer, diabetes, and other chronic disease. Our general knowledge has increase because of scientific research. As we have learned rules of behavior have changed and improved our lives. Laws and rules sometimes have encouraged the change in behavior.
Masks fall into this category. We have learned that wearing a mask can reduce the spread of air borne disease. Not wearing a mask or a mask mandate is a failure on our part to learn.
It is Time to Recognize the Truth.
Mask mandates work. Yes, you have a right to not wear a mask. But if you make that choice you need to be by yourself. For a mask to be effective it needs to cover both your mouth and your nose.
I question the integrity of any lawmaker who does not support a mask mandate. That lawmaker refuses to learn and accept change. Handling a crisis is about accepting change making decisions accordingly.
