Capitalism versus Socialism
My thoughts go out to my Texas Neighbors…
While I’m sorry for the last week’s events in Texas and hope for improved conditions throughout the country effected by the winter weather. I also believe this is a time to reflect.
These problems are exasperated by our capitalistic society. The failure to winterize power plants because of attempts to reduce cost and maximize profits. Capitalism at it’s finest.
So that brought rolling blackouts and extended power outages. Capitalism makes these events inevitable. The profit motive drives reducing costs. Greed wins.
And now the power comes back on and capitalism provides another twist. Supply and Demand drive costs to the consumer through the roof. $1000 plus dollar a day energy bill.
Socialism drives a different economy.
Our roadway system is available to all, but needs repair to prevent bridges from falling down and pot holes which damage our vehicles. Similar maintenance applies in other areas such as utilities like electricity, water, and heat. Regular maintenance and upgrade of utilities is necessary to prevent long term system failures.
Privatization and capitalism may drive short term low costs. But capitalism and profit without government regulation and support does not ensure our safety. Texas and the water issues through out the country prove this.
This is the battle between Socialism and Capitalism.
The recent events in Texas suggest that some form of government regulation is better then leaving unfettered capitalism control our utilities. The profit motive may drive down costs, but the results leave us at risk for disaster.
In our democracy, it is our elected officials who must find this balance.
The conditions of our roads, our utilities, our health care, our police and defense systems which lead me to believe we are failing those most in need. I believe a successful democracy demands a balance between capitalism and socialism.
Capitalism controlling all aspects of our economy continually leads us to disaster. It is time to change the balance back toward government support for our infrastructure.
