We are not going to control it.
What does this mean.
Mark Meadows is Donald Trump’s chief of staff. His full quote is: “We’re not going to control the pandemic,” Meadows said during an interview on CNN. “We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigations.”
I don’t have any problem with controlling the development of vaccines and therapeutics. While there have been many weird comments by Donald Trump, his stance on the development of therapeutics and a vaccine should be lauded.
Other Mitigations…
On this other topic, Donald Trump’s words and actions border on criminal. How else can you describe his stance on masks. He may sometimes say the right words, but his actions set an bad example for any chance to mitigate the spread of the virus.
As far as social distancing is concerned, his need for affirmation from his faithful, puts them and at risk. While we don’t know who will catch the virus, we know that these events threaten the health of those who congregate. The question is not if there is someone in the crowds who are infected, it is who. These events will spread the virus. And why?
Because Donald Trump needs the cheers. He needs to know that people like him. They are the affirmation of his greatness. Donald Trump can pound his chest, say how great he is and have cheering crowds feed his greatest need.
So Donald Trump has ignored mitigation techniques.
While he has not said it in these terms, there are people in these crowds who will get COVID-19. They will pass into their homes and work places to someone at risk. And people will die as a direct result of these campaign rallies. It may be true that fewer will die because we know better how to treat this disease, but that is not a reason for bad behavior. That is not a reason to put people at risk.
