The Initial Public Select Committee on Jan 6 Summary.
The Beginning of the January 6th Report.
I’ll admit I did not see it, but I did read the entire transcript found on NPR. The house select committee is mostly partisan. This was not the Democrats choice. They attempted to create an independent investigator. Republicans blocked that move.
Liz Cheney who is on the committee will never be confused as a Democrat. She is truly conservative one of the most conservative representatives in the House. She felt she had to stand up to her President when he stepped way out of bounds. Liz Cheney is a true patriot.
There can be little doubt that the events of Jan 6, 2020 were a direct attack to our democracy. The worst attack since the Civil War. On Jan 6, 2020 a riotous mob marched on the Capital in attempt to subvert the electoral process. They did that by overrunning the police and entering the Capital Building on the day the election was to be certified. The desire was to overturn the results of the election.
Why did it happen?
There are also undeniable facts in this case:
- Donald Trump claimed he won the election. He went to court multiple times and lost each and every one of his cases. Most because he lacked evidence. Attorney General William Barr (appointed by Donald Trump) told him there was not sufficient evidence to overturn the results. William Barr who backed him during the Mueller, by providing a synopsis of “No Collusion, No Obstruction.” This simple synopsis was the far from what the report actually said, but it stuck as the truth most people accepted. You can find my summary of the Mueller report here.
- He repeated this claim often between the election until this day. He has yet to provide any proof.
- Donald Trump during a debate asked the Proud Boys to “stand down and to stand by” during a presidential debate.
- He then invited his supporters to Washington, D.C. on January 6th for an event “Be there, will be wild!” The Proud Boys and other groups, took these words to mean it was time to take action.
Events of the Day
- On January 6, 2020, Donald Trump spoke to his gathered followers. You can find the transcript of this speech here. In a 13 page transcript Donald Trump used the word peacefully once on page 4. The rest of the speech:
- Accusations of fraud (investigated and found baseless by multiple courts.) Using these baseless accusations he was asking Congress to send the results back to the states, so that Joe Biden would not have his victory. If there is no victor, then the House decides the next president using a technique that favors republicans.
- Exhorting his followers to be strong, to be brave, without which we won’t have a country anymore.
- Following Donald Trump’s speech his supporters attacked the Capital Building while Congress was in session. Causing death and injury to the police on the scene and damage to the building itself. The Congressional session is stopped while the Senate chamber is overrun by rioters.
- About 6 hours after the House and Senate adjourned, Congress was brought back into session.
Donald Trump’s Communication While Congress was delayed.
- In about an hour after Congress retreats into recess Donald Trump tweets, “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”
- About 40 minutes later Donald Trump tweets, “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!”
- About 3 hours after Congress had recessed Trump released a video asking his supporters to go home. “So go home. We love you. You’re very special. I know how you feel. But go home and go home in peace.”
- Donald Trump tweets again an hour and 15 minutes later. “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace,” and about 1/2 hour later. “Remember this day forever!”
Conclusion
The facts listed above are undeniable. We either saw these for ourselves our they were placed in public view on the internet as the events unfurled.
This was a planned coups.
Plan and simple. The plan may have been to push the certification back to the states and to peacefully reject the actual results and substitute results more to the likely of Donald Trump, but the plan was to refuse to accept the results of the election.
It was an attempted coups.
So how do we heal these wounds.
By Election after election.
I believe there are good Republicans who act on faith and uphold their oath of office. Liz Chaney is an example of a good patriotic Republican. I disagree with her politics, but I respect her integrity.
There are Republicans and Democrats who obstruct any idea advanced by an opponent. As I’ve stated in the past, I believe the differences between the two parties on immigration reform are very few. But the issue remains unresolved, mainly because at this time immigration is a talking point for re-electing Republicans. Republicans don’t offer solutions, but only point out the problems.
I can’t remember the last time I heard a Republican offer a solution to any real issue. In 2020 the Republicans didn’t even bother to create a platform. Donald Trump couldn’t break a promise because he didn’t make any.
We must elect legislators who talk about resolutions and don’t just point fingers. Integrity will return to our political institutions when our elected legislators begin working across the aisle to seek common ground. Until then we will continue to have chaos.
My Priority List
In November 2020, when it was clear that Biden had won the election I provide my list of priorities for Joe Biden. At that time I provided a list of items with a chance of advancing through Congress. I was wrong.
I’d like to revise this list to what I believe should be the priority election issues.
- The ECONOMY: This is an issue the effects everyone. While inflation is causing more pain in our daily lives since Jimmy Carter. I’d like to point out differences in parties. The budget deficit decrease every year under Obama and increased every year under Trump. In the first year of the Biden administration the deficit decreased. We will never have a sound economy with increasing budget deficits. Advantage Democrats.
- Immigration Reform: This is a long standing problem. We need new laws to address immigration. Any immigration package should include:
- A path to citizenship for any law abiding late teenage or adult immigrant brought here by a parent as a youth.
- A path to citizenship for any law abiding individual who has been here more then 10 years.
- Improved border security.
- Diplomatic solutions to the reasons people leave their native countries.
- Gun Control Legislation:
- Waiting periods with centralized background checks.
- Banning all weapons of war, and yes an AR15 is a weapon of war according to the analysis of retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton.
- Limiting the number of rounds fired with a single pull of the trigger to 1 and the number of rounds in a magazine.
- Banning ammunition which travels at excessive rates of speed.
- Universal Health Care. I have felt for decades that the only fair health care system is one which provides health care to all our citizens. A single payer health care system proposed by Bernie Sanders and others is ideal.
How I will vote.
These are my voting issues. I will continue to vote exclusively for democrats, because the ideals of most democrats align with my ideals best. Voting for a republican is not an option as long a republicans as a group obstruct progress on the issues important to me.
Overtime my issues my evolve, but my sentiment that if I have to chose between democracy and capitalism: I’ll chose democracy everytime.
